Greetings!
Let me congratulate you for your decision to be a Doctor and serve patients - as this is a noble profession and patients consider Dr’s next to god who takes care of them in illness. I wanted to meet you personally but felt first let me route out this thoughtful communication that ignites you towards the focus of proper marketing and branding in Healthcare with giving quality patient care as your aim.
While I see today the passion to be a doctor needs lots of conviction, finances and willpower. At the outset after completion of studies and going in job or as and when starting private practice by associating with hospitals or creating an own set-up again needs a lot of conviction, planning and finances. With demanding customers, a focus on awareness of your present and the treatment options and then better treatment both are the cornerstone of success.
At times I think can really doctors ensure the awareness area of marketing and brand their set-ups well so that they can focus on their duties of effective treatment. Well! Not many Dr’s are good at both. I too believe let marketing and branding be left on to experts and the Dr’s should focus on treatment of their patients with best possible options whether they are in job or as associated visiting consultant or have their own set-ups.
The other daunting fact for most hospital setups is a huge investment in machinery and equipment along with operational cost and the EMI burdens that the Dr’s have to undertake in their setups is always at risk if marketing, branding is not generating business returns. I have seen huge setups failing and equipment after 5-7 years outdated with new technologies as they didn’t pay importance to branding and marketing for that was not their core strength and thus such set-ups with less or no patient are running in losses or bound to close.
Another fact that I have been hearing from years that many Dr’s say that they don’t need to market as good treatment spreads by word of mouth but again that will take a long time and with time they may see their energy and practice decline with new sets-ups new competition and latest updated breed of new Dr’s coming in vicinity. So importance of marketing and branding can’t be ruled out as an ongoing basis for new as well as existing set-ups doing well so that they maintain relation with referral community and activity based patient detection for care and cure.
The issue with most branding and marketing companies have been their lack of knowledge in healthcare and largely copying the work of one another with no unique identity, then again charging astronomical huge sums for their services not in rational.
